The Zambia Meteorological Department (ZMD) was established on 1st January 1967 as a specialized agency under the then Ministry of Power, Transport & Works. from 2021 the Department has been placed under the Ministry of green Economy & Environment.

The role of the Meteorological Department is to produce and disseminate weather and climatic information to the aviation, agriculture and other sectors in order to facilitate informed decision making.
